Hanging Baskets
Welcome to ‘Hanging Baskets Guide,’ the site that will show you how easy it is to create your own custom hanging basket.
There’s no need to confine your ideas to just summer planting. With a bit of planning you can keep your hanging baskets looking vibrant and beautiful all year round - even in the winter!
When you want colour high up relating closely to the building, the easiest way is to create a hanging garden, either in baskets or in wall-mounted containers. You do not have to be a full-time gardener, be blessed with green fingers or even have a garden to create stunning floral displays. A well made hanging basket is designed so that as the flowers grow, they cascade through the sides and spill over the edges in a fantastic show of colour, covering the entire basket.
The artistry of hanging baskets lies in the way in which you arrange and combine all your raw materials, not just the plants themselves, but the container and the site you choose for it. Sensitive colour co-ordination can make the difference between a planting scheme that is just pretty and one that draws gasps of admiration. The right plants in the right basket enhance each other. Think about the background too - the colour of the surrounding walls, the paint on the window frame - and make the picture work together as a whole.
Single colour schemes can be striking, emphasizing the contrasting forms of the flowers and foliage, but so can strong contrasts of colour or tone. One basket, alone on a large wall can look rather insignificant. Try planting up baskets in pairs, either with similar plants to create an echoing effect, or with clashing, contrasting colours.
Whatever you choose to do remember that baskets need lots of watering, especially in the dry mid-summer months, and never let them dry completely out. It's almost impossible to get them to retain water again without completely soaking them in water. Saying that, you also have to be careful not to over water, water logging can be more damaging than pests or disease! It's a tricky balance but you soon learn when and how to water your basket, and we are here to guide you through the basics.
So lets begin!
